Target user
Primary: 18–28, Reggio Emilia and province, goes out Fri–Sun, discovers events through Instagram stories, WhatsApp groups, and PR/promoter contacts — not through apps. Plans late (Thu–Fri for the weekend). Price-sensitive; free entry and guest lists matter.
Numbers (estimates flagged): RE province ≈ 530k residents → ~63–66k aged 18–30 (derived from ISTAT age structure; verify on demo.istat.it). Four-province catchment (RE+Modena+Parma+Bologna) ≈ 2.7M → ~330–360k aged 18–30.
Discovery habits: IG/TikTok dominate; PR culture in Emilia runs on WhatsApp lists and paper. Much real nightlife happens outside licensed clubs (SILB reported 2,600 complaints about unlicensed events in 2024) — under-served inventory no aggregator covers.
Competitor landscape (researched 2026-07-22)
| Player | Model | Lesson for Flow |
|---|---|---|
| Xceed (Milan→Barcelona) | Tickets/guestlists marketplace + free venue SaaS; 3% processing + 15% commission on marketplace-originated bookings | Survived 10+ yrs on <€5M by staying nightlife-vertical; monetizes transactions, not discovery |
| DICE | Ticketing, 7–15% organizer-side | Owns the transaction |
| Fever | Media network (Secret NYC…) feeds its own demand | Distribution-first wins |
| YPlan † | Raised 2M (2016) | City-by-city expansion burned it; curation has no margin |
| 2night | Consumer discovery → pivoted to B2B marketing | Consumer discovery alone doesn’t pay |
| Clubbing (IT) | Commission-only ticketing, free for users | Proof the model works in Italy at small scale |
| @fommquell-style IG pages | Weekend digest content | The actual competitor for attention — and the playbook Flow’s IG tool mirrors |
Italy supply context: ~2,500 licensed dance venues (SILB-FIPE 2024), 34M admissions, €500M direct revenue, but structurally declining (2,100+ closures in 14 yrs) — growth is in bars/one-off events.
Strategic implications
- Cold start kills these apps. Empty app = death spiral. Build audience before app: the IG digest channel is the correct wedge — it has zero cold-start problem.
- Density-first, one city. Every failure pattern (YPlan) is premature expansion. RE province alone has enough 18–30s.
- Monetize the transaction, later. Survivors sell tickets/guestlists (commission), not subscriptions. Do not build payments before there is demand to transact.
- PR tools are the venue wedge. PR economics run on WhatsApp/paper; a free list/check-in tool is cheap to build and creates venue relationships (Xceed’s proven path).
